Hagerty Radical Cup UK Round 6

A report from Round 6 of the Hagerty Radical Cup UK at Brands Hatch Indy

14th & 15th September 2024

Chris Lulham sealed his first real-world championship title in front of friends and family at his home circuit - Brands Hatch, winning another treble - his fourth in a dominant debut season of Hagerty Radical Cup UK.

Race 1

Lulham pipped his main championship rival - due to the absence of Valour Racing teammate Luke Hilton, DW Racing’s Oscar Joyce, to pole for the opening race of the weekend by just 0.257 secs - his ninth pole of the season.

“We had changed the balance of the car a bit and made more changes from practice into qualifying. It was just fine-tuning, but I want to go out of the season a winner, although the reverse grid race may be difficult,” said Lulham.

From lights out, pole-sitting Chris Lulham made a good clean start, to head Oscar Joyce and series debutant Max McRae as they plunged out of Paddock Hill bend, followed by the remaining Radical SR3 field. Lulham extended his lead and finally took the flag over 13 seconds clear of his rivals with 27 laps of the Brands Hatch Indy circuit under his belt. “I just focused on my race time being on my own. The car was really good, so I kept going for it,” he confirmed.

Race 2

Race two saw another quick break off the start line by the lead trio, with Lulham, Joyce and McRae over a second clear of Macleod at the end of the opening lap. Lulham, yet again, spent the full 20-minute race out front, uninterrupted and building a significant lead - crossing the finish line 11.9 seconds clear of Oscar Joyce. “My tyre management was better in this race. It was a bit closer at the start this time, but no real danger,” Lulham admitted confidently.

Race 3

Chris started the final reverse grid and concluding race of the season fourth, but running had to be stopped on the opening lap, after Peter Tyler and James Pinkerton came together on the run up to Druids. Six surviving SR3s made the restart – and the race reduced to 15 minutes.

Max McRae led the opening lap, after taking Yang around the outside at Paddock, with Lulham snatching second into Druids. The following lap, the #20 Valour Racing Radical SR3 XXR - clad in distinctive Team Redline livery, was leading into Druids. Despite the shortened race distance, Lulham still amassed an impressive 12.2-second lead over Max McRae, lapping almost a second faster on each lap.

Lulham made it a hat-trick of wins from three races over the weekend – which took place at the racer’s local circuit, Brands Hatch.  In total, he won 16 races out of a possible 18 in his first-ever full season of circuit racing.

“I feel a bit sad in a way that it’s over, but it’s been a very enjoyable year, with a great car from a great team,” he said.

“The highs for me have been learning a lot of specifics, so different to SIM racing. Controlling outside things that you can’t practice like warming your tyres before the races. The low was definitely Snetterton, my mistakes, but it taught me more discipline and consistency,” he concluded.

On the Sunday evening, to wrap up the season in style, the annual “Night of Champions” awards dinner and prize-giving took place, where Chris Lulham also received the Sunoco award for Radical SR3 Fastest Driver.
