Hagerty Radical Cup UK Round 3

A report from Round 3 of the Hagerty Radical Cup UK at Oulton Park

22nd & 23rd June 2024

Championship leader Chris Lulham was once again in supreme form at Oulton Park, as the Hagerty Radical Cup UK made its third and final appearance of the season alongside the British Touring Car Championship, in front of 40,000 spectators.

Over a second a lap quicker than his Valour Racing teammate Luke Hilton, Lulham’s pole position for Race 1 was never really in doubt. “I got my fastest lap at the end, but I don’t think that there is that much more to come. We made more progress with the set up and matched my optimum time,” he said.

Race 1

Lulham in the #20 Radical SR3 XXR had to hold off a determined challenge from Hilton, in identical machinery,  into Old Hall at the start of Race 1, but the lead duo were soon in the clear.

Teammate Luke Hilton was on the limit trying to stay in touch with Lulham, but lost ground after a mishap on Lap 6. Lulham cruised to his sixth win of the season - over half a minute ahead of Luke Hilton, who was second on the road still. “Once I had the gap I just stayed consistent,” Lulham claimed.

Race 2

It was another lights to flag lead for Lulham, who once again sprinted clear from his rivals Hilton, Macleod, Joyce, Tyler and McAlpine over the start line. It was another comfortable win for Lulham – just five-tenths short of a 30-second lead. “We made some more adjustments and they worked, particularly in the second half of the race,” he explained.

Race 3

The final race of the weekend was, as always, the partially reversed grid. Lulham started fourth, but took the lead into Old Hall, with Rishover, Joyce, Hilton and Tyler following. But going onto the 14th lap, a car off at Knickerbrook brought out the red flag, confirming Lulham’s eighth victory of the season – having taken the chequered flag with a 31-second lead. “I had a good start and managed to squeeze around the outside at the first corner. I knew I had good pace as I had all weekend, but kept pushing,” he explained.

Chris secured the fastest lap of the race in all three races – whilst his fastest lap (1:19.656) from Saturday’s qualifying was enough to secure a new Radical SR3 lap record for Oulton Park’s Island circuit. Furthermore, Lulham was the recipient of the Sunoco UK Driver of the Weekend Award, having secured a hat-trick of stand-out victories across the weekend. He concluded Round 3 of the 2024 Hagerty Radical Cup UK with a whopping sixty point championship lead over Valour Racing teammate Luke Hilton.
